This glass negative records Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth president, who was among the most photographed public figures of his era. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of pictures produced by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The title comes from caption information written by the agency, which has not been independently verified, so the occasion and date of the picture remain uncertain. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium for press work of the period, and their fine detail is a large part of their value to researchers.
