Betting pools, in which a group of bettors pooled their stakes and split the winnings according to a race result, were a familiar part of sporting life in New York in the 1870s, and this lithograph takes its title from the phrase for a crowd that "scooped" the whole kitty. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued many comic and sporting scenes for a mass audience, made prints like this one to amuse buyers who followed racing and gambling. The picture is useful for seeing how betting on horses was portrayed to the public in the late 1870s, when pool selling was widespread and often mocked in the press.
