A pencil inscription on this sheet gives the title as "La Lecture," or "The Reading," while the printed title is "The Map," a pairing that points to a quiet scene of a woman absorbed in a page. Mary Cassatt, an American artist working in Paris, made it in 1890, when she was turning toward scenes of women's everyday lives and experimenting with printmaking alongside Degas. Drypoint is made by scratching lines directly into a copper plate with a steel needle, which leaves a soft burr that prints as rich, velvety tone. This impression is the third state in Breeskin's catalog, so the plate was reworked at least twice before it was printed in this form.
