The view of Jas. B. Smith & Co.'s blank book manufactory in Philadelphia shows a workshop that produced the ruled ledgers, journals and account books that merchants and clerks filled by hand. Firms like this one cut, ruled, bound and stitched paper before any writing went into it, and Philadelphia was one of the leading American centers for printing and bookbinding in the 1800s. The record gives no date, and the name Kollner on the shelflist card is unverified, so the picture's exact origin remains uncertain.
