Here Irving appears as the author of *The Sketch Book*, the collection that brought him wide fame in the early 1820s with stories like "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." The portrait was drawn by G.S. Newton and reproduced by the firm Annin & Smith, and the record dates it only to roughly the middle to late nineteenth century. That timing shows how Irving's likeness kept circulating long after his book first appeared. His blend of American landscape and European-style storytelling made him one of the first American writers to win an international readership.
