This color lithograph advertises "The Economy," a wall desk made by the Cortland Desk Co., and its slogan promises a writing desk for every home. The printer, G.H. Dunston of Buffalo, New York, produced it around 1888, when businesses relied on bold, colorful posters to sell furniture and household goods. Fold-down wall desks like this one were a practical answer for families with little room, since the desk could be closed flat against the wall when not in use. The poster shows how manufacturers marketed everyday furniture as a convenience for the growing middle-class home.
