A winding automobile road follows the flank of Grandfather Mountain near Linville, North Carolina, a scene that would have been unusual in the early 1910s, when cars were still a novelty outside cities. Linville had developed into a summer resort in the Blue Ridge highlands, drawing visitors from the lowlands to escape the heat, and roads like this carried them into mountain terrain that had recently been reachable mainly by wagon or on foot. The photoprint is copyrighted by Herbert W. Pelton and dated c1912, though that information comes from an old caption card and has not been verified.
