A young mechanic bent over the engine of his automobile sets this stereograph apart from the many images of motorcars on the board, since its subject is the labor of keeping early cars running rather than the machines in showroom polish. The card was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that produced large numbers of stereo views for home viewers in the early twentieth century, and its caption tracings point to automobile mechanics and children as its themes. Around 1911, car repair was still a fresh trade, with owners often doing their own tinkering with hand tools and few garages offering specialized service. The record notes that its data come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the exact location and the boy's identity remain unknown.
