Mangolds, a large fodder beet grown to feed livestock, are the crop in this plate, which shows workers lifting roots from the flat, drained fields of the Fens in eastern England. Peter Henry Emerson published it in 1887 as the fourth plate in *Pictures from Life in Field and Fen*, a book of photogravures that showed rural laborers without sentimental posing. Photogravure transfers a photograph through an etched copper plate, giving the image a soft tonal depth well suited to Emerson's naturalistic aims, and the hand harvest it records came before the mechanical root lifters that later replaced such work.
