Two men work a horse-drawn implement through a cornfield, a scene that shows how much of American harvesting depended on animal power well into the early twentieth century. Before tractors became common on farms, teams of horses or mules pulled cutters, binders, and wagons, and the work of getting the crop in often fell to whole families and neighbors working together. Pictures like this one, placed among the farm equipment images, capture the transition period when mechanization was arriving but muscle and harness still did much of the labor.
