Mother, My Fiancé" is an ink drawing on two joined sheets of bristol board, signed by Juanita Hamel in the lower left corner. Its title frames the scene as a family moment, a young woman presenting her intended to her mother, a situation that cartoonists and illustrators of the period often used for light social commentary. The label on the back shows it was distributed by the Newspaper Feature Service, a syndicate that supplied illustrations and features to daily papers, and the editorial marks on the image suggest it was prepared for reproduction in print. Drawn around 1919, it reflects the shifting courtship customs of the early postwar years.
