Rather than a straightforward appeal, this poster opens with a puzzle. Its rebus-style design uses eyes as a visual pun on the command "Turn to the right!", so the viewer has to work out the message before reaching the pitch. Printed in New York in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it bears a stamp from the U.S. Navy recruiting station at 225 West 42nd Street, which shows how such posters were distributed locally. The Navy promoted itself as the nation's "first line of defense," a slogan aimed at a country newly at war and in need of volunteers.
