Tall and narrow at 103 by 45 centimeters, this color lithograph promoted the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto in 1919, the year after the Armistice ended the First World War. J.E.H. MacDonald, a painter and designer who later helped found the Group of Seven, created it, and the Canada Food Board, a wartime agency that encouraged food conservation, is credited as its sponsor. The record's subject terms point to soldiers, victory celebrations and symbolic imagery, reflecting a country marking its war effort as the fair returned to peacetime life.
