Here an actor is pictured in the role of "The Squire," a rural New England landowner figure from *Way Down East*, the 1920 silent melodrama directed by D.W. Griffith. The film adapted a stage play by Lottie Blair Parker, and its story of a country girl deceived by a city man turns on the small-town and farm life that Griffith filmed on location. The film's climactic ice-floe rescue is still among the most discussed sequences of silent cinema. The farm setting of the story gives the portrait its connection to the rural life shown on this board.
