Parked against a snowbound fence line, an old black tractor shows the kind of machinery that carried American farm work through the first half of the twentieth century. Tractors like this one replaced teams of horses and mules on many farms, pulling plows and hauling loads in fields that were often muddy or frozen for much of the year. Seeing one left out in winter weather is a reminder of how much equipment depended on a shed or barn, and how quickly exposed metal weathered without care. Look closely at the wheels, seat and exhaust stack for signs of wear, since those details tell as much about farm life as the snow does.
