The title on this glass negative names a woman, Nancy C. Glave, but the Bain News Service recorded that name from caption cards and never verified it, so the identification should be read with some caution. George Grantham Bain started the Bain News Service in New York around 1900 to supply news photographs to newspapers and magazines, and its glass negatives document the portrait and news work that filled those pages. The record gives no date, so the picture is best understood as part of that early twentieth-century wire-service practice, when quickly reproduced photographs of people in the news were in steady demand.
