This glass negative from the Bain News Service is said to show the Russian-born pianist Ossip Gabrilowitsch and Clara Clemens, the daughter of Mark Twain. The couple married in 1909, and Gabrilowitsch later became a conductor, leading the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The Bain agency, based in New York, produced portraits like this for newspapers that needed quick images of public figures, and its caption cards were not always checked. The record marks the title as unverified, so the identification should be treated as provisional.
