The title names the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company, the regional carrier that served Washington, D.C., and parts of Maryland and Virginia in the early twentieth century, and its abbreviation appears on this glass negative as a company identifier. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the city and its businesses in the 1910s and 1920s, made the image, so it captures the everyday commercial life of the capital during the rapid expansion of telephone service. Because the title is unverified and the date is inferred from negatives in the same range, the exact scene should be read with some caution. Faint streaks and blemishes from the aging of the glass coating are also visible.
