Few details survive about the sitter, whom the National Photo Company labeled as Jas. P. Glynn of Connecticut, though the company's title is unverified. The negative dates to roughly 1918 to 1921, when the firm, based in Washington, D.C., produced large numbers of portraits and news pictures of officials, visitors and ordinary citizens. Glass plates remained a common working medium for studio and press photographers well into the 1920s, and the streaks and blemishes on this one come from the original coating breaking down over time. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
