Hanging carcasses fill the upper half of this scene, with sides of beef and pork swinging from iron hooks above a counter where customers wait their turn. The record gives no maker or exact date, but the arrangement is typical of American meat markets of the late 1800s and early 1900s, when a butcher shop often doubled as a community meeting place. Refrigeration was limited then, so shops relied on cold storage, sawdust floors, and daily deliveries from nearby farms. Look at how the crowd is dressed and how the goods are displayed to get a sense of everyday commerce in that period.
