The only name attached to this negative is "Mr. Frye," and the record notes that even this title comes from unverified caption data kept by the Bain News Service. The Bain agency, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York, produced and distributed news and portrait photographs from about 1900 into the 1920s, and its glass plates recorded everyday public life of that era: politicians, businessmen, performers and street scenes. Because the subject is unidentified and no date is recorded, the sitter's role and the moment of the exposure can't be confirmed from this entry alone. The small glass format, though, is typical of the agency's working files.
