Two men, named in the caption only as Mr. Frye and E.C. Stowell, are the people this glass negative records, and the names come from unverified notes kept by the Bain News Service. George Grantham Bain ran the New York agency from about 1899, supplying newspapers with pictures of people and events in the early twentieth century. Plates like this one were made for quick newspaper reproduction, so many carry little more than a name. Without a confirmed date, the occasion and the sitters' roles remain open questions for researchers.
