The record names two women, Nell Johnson and Agnes Stowell, though the Library of Congress notes that these names come from unverified caption information written by the Bain News Service. The picture survives as a glass negative, a fragile medium that the Bain agency used for much of its work. George Grantham Bain ran the New York-based news photo service in the early twentieth century, selling pictures of current events, public figures and everyday city life to newspapers. Because the date is missing, the negative is best read as a document of that commercial press trade and of the photographic methods of its period, not as a fixed record of a known event.
