Yreka, California, in 1884 was a mountain town of the Klamath country whose fortunes still rested on the gold that had drawn miners to Siskiyou County in the early 1850s. By then placer digging had given way in large part to quartz mining and hydraulic work in the surrounding hills, and the town's merchants, teamsters, and stage operators depended on the freight and passengers that moved over the mountain roads toward the Oregon line. As county seat, Yreka was also the place for courthouse business, land records, and county elections, and its newspapers and churches gave residents a steady civic life. The town's Chinese community, which had arrived with the mining boom, still worked in trades and small businesses, though anti-Chinese feeling ran strong in the state at the time. Residents in 1884 knew Yreka above all as the heart of the county's mining and government affairs.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Yreka, California, drawn in 1884. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
