Stockton, California, in 1895 was a river port and farm-trade center at the head of navigation on the San Joaquin River, where steamboats carried grain, wool, and other valley produce downriver toward San Francisco Bay. Wheat and barley dominated the surrounding fields of San Joaquin County, and warehouses and milling concerns lined the waterfront while rail lines linked the town to markets beyond the valley. The population had grown to roughly ten thousand by the early 1890s, and the city's streets held churches, schools, and the state hospital for the insane, which had opened there in 1851. Residents knew Stockton as the commercial heart of the inland delta country, where farm prosperity and river traffic shaped most civic decisions.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Stockton 2, California, drawn in 1895. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
