In 1877 Santa Barbara was a small seaside county seat of a few thousand people, with an economy built on cattle, grain, and the wool and hide trade from the surrounding ranchos. Stearns Wharf, completed in 1872, let coastal schooners load those goods, since the town had no rail line yet; the Southern Pacific would not reach it until 1887. The Spanish-era Mission Santa Barbara, founded in 1786 on a rise above the town, still anchored the skyline and the sense of the past. Residents of the period knew the town for its mild climate and its growing appeal to visitors seeking rest and good air, a reputation that would shape the decades ahead.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Santa Barbara, California, drawn in 1877. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
