Titled for the "March 1917 revolution," a name that uses the Gregorian calendar, this photoprint was issued by the U.S. Information Agency, which operated from 1953 to 1999, and its caption card gives no date. The uprising is usually called the February Revolution, since Russia still used the Julian calendar then, and it forced Tsar Nicholas II to abdicate after months of food shortages and war weariness. A provisional government and the Petrograd Soviet then shared power in an uneasy arrangement that lasted until the Bolsheviks seized control in October. Because the record is unverified, the people pictured should be checked against other sources before they are identified.
