Few holiday posters from the First World War asked Americans to join an organization rather than simply give money, but this 1918 lithograph by illustrator Harrison Fisher does exactly that, calling on viewers to answer the American Red Cross Christmas roll call. Fisher was best known for polished portraits of young American women, and he brought that popular style to a wartime appeal. The Red Cross held its membership enrollment each December, and during the war these drives drew millions of Americans into support for soldiers, nurses and relief work. The print's subject headings also link it to the war fund and bond campaigns that ran alongside enrollment.
