Titled "Christmas Mail," this glass negative points to the holiday rush that once filled post offices, when families and businesses sent cards and parcels across long distances before the season. The George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds it, came from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with photographs in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified information the agency wrote on the negative or its caption card, so the exact scene and location should be read with that caution. Even so, the subject shows how central mail was to holiday life in that period.
