Few holiday pictures from the early twentieth century show the sheer volume of the season as plainly as this one, with a heap of wrapped parcels piled high enough to fill the frame. It is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of work produced by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers across the country. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact year and location are unknown. Still, the pile of packages reflects a practice that grew sharply as mail-order catalogs and department store holiday sales spread gift-giving through American households.
