Workers are shown packing holiday gifts for a Christmas ship, the vessels that carried presents and supplies to communities that could not easily receive them by land. The record gives no date or location, and its title comes from unverified notes written by the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose glass negatives make up George Grantham Bain's collection. That collection mostly covers the early twentieth century, and the scene fits the charitable holiday shipping customs of that period. The emphasis on the packing itself, rather than the ship, shows how much organized labor went into getting seasonal goodwill to its recipients.
