Holiday street peddlers selling small gifts and seasonal goods are the focus here, a scene that once filled city sidewalks in the weeks before Christmas. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of pictures made by the Bain News Service, an early twentieth-century photo agency that covered city life and national news. The title was supplied by the agency on its negatives or caption cards and has not been independently verified, so the exact location and date remain uncertain. Even so, the image records a familiar seasonal trade, with vendors working the street to reach shoppers during the holiday rush.
