Columbus, Kentucky, stands on high bluffs above the Mississippi, so this aerial view from April 20, 1927, shows a town looking down on floodwater spread across the lowlands below. The river stood at 56.4 feet on the Cairo gage that day. The print belongs to a group of flood photographs in an album covering the Mississippi and its tributaries during the high water of 1927, when aerial views helped officials track where the water had gone and which levees were holding. That flood was one of the largest disasters in the Mississippi Valley, forcing hundreds of thousands of people from their homes across several states.
