The caption on this glass negative reads only "N. Longworth," and the record does not confirm who is shown or when the exposure was made. That gap is typical of the Bain News Service, the New York agency George Grantham Bain founded to supply newspapers with photographs of current events and public figures in the early twentieth century. Staff often wrote captions quickly from negatives or accompanying cards, so names and dates were not always checked. Glass plates of this size were the working medium of news photography before roll film became common, which makes the collection a useful record of how those newsrooms operated.
