The title pairs a Baron Madarassy with a Beck, but the Bain News Service recorded those names without verifying them, so the sitters and the occasion remain uncertain. The negative is a glass plate measuring five by seven inches or smaller, the format Bain's staff used for much of their newspaper work. George Grantham Bain founded the New York agency around 1899, and it supplied photographs of public figures and events to newspapers into the 1930s, which makes this plate a useful trace of the news pictures of that era.
