Kataoka, a Japanese surname, but the Bain News Service recorded it from unverified data on the negative or its caption card, so the identity of the subject is not confirmed. Bain News Service, the New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied pictures to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, and its negatives were made on glass plates no larger than 5 by 7 inches. No date is recorded for this one, so it is best placed within the agency's active years, roughly 1900 to the 1910s, when its files covered portraits, news events and everyday scenes across the city.
