The negative carries the name Grand Duchess Anastasia, but the Bain News Service recorded that title without verification, so it is best read as a working identification. Anastasia Nikolaevna was the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, and her family's execution in Yekaterinburg in 1918 later drew wide attention to her image. The Bain agency, a New York news photography firm, supplied pictures of public figures to newspapers, so this glass plate reflects the press's appetite for royal portraits in its era.
