A winged cherub presses a kiss to the lips of a nude woman holding a bundle of flowers, placing the scene within the long tradition of love allegory. Cupid, son of Venus in Roman myth, was the god whose arrows stirred desire, and European artists from the Renaissance onward often showed him as a winged child moving among mortals. Such scenes drew on classical models and were admired in painting and print, where the nude stood for ideals of beauty rather than a portrait of a particular woman. The tie to Valentine's Day came later, as the February feast became linked to romantic love in medieval and early modern culture, and Cupid became one of its emblems.
