A cherub sawing at a violin while surrounded by roses is an unusual twist on Cupid, who is more often shown with a bow and arrows alone. Here the bow and arrows sit beside the instrument, so the image blends two ideas: the love-struck archer and the musician whose tunes stir the heart. Images like this were popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when Valentine's cards and printed greetings borrowed Cupid's playful imagery to express romantic feeling. The roses add a second layer of symbolism, since they were long associated with love and affection in European art.
