Cupid appears here with wings spread, cutting a bow from a block of wood while two chubby putti look on, a scene that turns the god of love into a craftsman at work. The image draws on the classical notion that love is shaped and aimed, like an arrow loosed from a well-made bow. Putti, the small nude winged children of Renaissance and Baroque art, were a favorite way for artists to suggest playful, unruly affection, and the pairing of a bow-making Cupid with attentive helpers makes the pictorial joke clear. Valentine's Day, with its long association with courtship and romantic tokens, is a natural setting for such an image.
