Cupid, drawn with his bow and arrow, anchors this card from the Valentine's Day collection, a small emblem of romance that Victorian and early twentieth-century makers reproduced in great numbers. Valentines of this kind were often sent anonymously or with a few handwritten lines, and the mass-produced card gave people a way to express affection they might find hard to voice aloud. Paper lace, embossed borders and colored lithography were common decorations, and surviving examples show how the custom grew from handmade tokens into a commercial industry in the United States and Britain.
