Cupid, the winged boy of Roman myth, is the figure at the center of this Valentine card, holding a pair of hearts marked "True Love." The motif grew popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when printed greeting cards became cheap enough for ordinary people to send to sweethearts and friends. Cupid's arrows and bow, borrowed from classical mythology, symbolized the sudden pangs of romantic love, and cards like this one turned that old imagery into a sentimental message. Look closely at the lettering and decorative border, which show how card makers of the period blended ornament with text.
