A woman lies at ease on the grass while two cupids hover and play nearby, turning an ordinary garden into a stage for romance. The scene draws on the eighteenth-century taste for the *fête galante*, in which elegant figures courted and lounged in parkland, a tradition Antoine Watteau helped make popular in France. Cupid, the winged son of Venus, became the familiar emblem of romantic love, which is why such figures later suited Valentine's Day cards and sentimental prints. The cupids act as messengers of desire, while the reclining woman seems unhurried and content.
