Two cupids keep company with a seated woman in a garden, placing love's winged messengers beside a figure at rest rather than in motion. Cupid, the Roman god of desire known as Eros in Greek myth, is usually shown with a bow, and European artists from the Renaissance on often multiplied him into chubby winged children called putti. Garden scenes like this were popular with painters interested in courtship and leisure, and the link to Valentine's Day rests on the long tradition of cupids as emblems of romance. Notice how the calm pose contrasts with the playful energy of the cupids.
