Two cherubs hold hands and dance across a meadow ringed by slender birch trunks, a pastoral setting that softens the usual image of Cupid as a sharp-edged archer. Scenes like this drew on the classical and Renaissance tradition of putti, the winged infant figures that artists borrowed from ancient sculpture and used to suggest love, play and the gentler side of desire. Cupid's place on Valentine's Day owes much to later centuries, when the holiday's sentimental cards and tokens made the mischievous god a fixture of romance. Notice how the open, woodland landscape turns a mythic motif into an everyday scene of companionship.
