Howard Chandler Christy's 1919 poster, *The Spirit of America: Join*, pairs a Red Cross appeal with the American flag and a nurse, the three figures the American Red Cross leaned on to recruit members as the First World War ended. The color lithograph was printed by the Forbes Lithograph Company, and the record credits Percy MacKaye, the playwright and poet, among its related names. Christy was best known for his glamorous illustrations of women, so the poster shows how a commercial illustrator's style was turned to civic fundraising and enrollment. Its subject headings also point to the war's economic side, when public campaigns like this one asked ordinary Americans to buy in, give, and join.
