Little is recorded about the sitter beyond the name Marion Coakley, and even that comes from data the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card, so it has not been independently verified. The image survives as a glass negative no larger than 5 by 7 inches, the format Bain's staff used for the news and portrait work they supplied to newspapers. George Grantham Bain founded the service in New York in the early twentieth century, and its files capture the city's people and events during the years before the First World War. Because the subject's identity and the date are uncertain, the picture is best read as an example of the service's working output and its glass-plate technique.
