The only identifying detail this negative carries is a surname, Murphy, which the Bain News Service recorded on its caption cards, and no date, location or sitter is confirmed. The agency was a New York news photo service founded by George Grantham Bain, which supplied newspapers with pictures of current events, public figures and city life in the early twentieth century. Its glass negatives, often 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were working tools made for quick reproduction in print rather than for display. Without a verified subject, the picture is best understood as one example of that daily newspaper trade.
