Moses Soyer's lithograph "Defense Workers" turns its attention to the men and women who staffed American war production in the early 1940s, when factories were scaling up for the war effort. Soyer was known for sympathetic portraits of ordinary city people, and here the figures are shown as individuals rather than as a faceless workforce. The print is signed and titled in pencil by the artist, and its dating, given as 1942 or 1943, places it at the height of the defense buildup that drew many workers into industrial jobs.
