This panoramic view records a 1903 football meeting between Harvard and Dartmouth, two Northeastern college teams whose rivalry was already well established by then. The same year, Harvard finished its concrete horseshoe stadium in Cambridge, one of the first large permanent football stadiums in the United States, and the sweep of the crowd in a wide frame like this shows how quickly college football was drawing spectators. Panoramic photographs of the period were made on large-format cameras that turned slowly across a scene, so the stands, field and onlookers appear stretched across the frame. Look closely at the spectators' clothing and hats to get a sense of how a turn-of-the-century crowd dressed for an autumn game.
